Southern Fried Roadtrip
J. Matt Hoch 1/16-19/2004 |
Adam and I went on a roadtrip, mostly through Tennessee.

Our adventures
took us from Atlanta Georgia, to Chattanooga, TN, where we visited Rock
City ("See Rock City"). We purchased tickets for Ruby Falls
at that time, but later realized we didn't have time to take to Ruby Falls
Tour. We returned our tickets and from there we continued to Lynchburg,
TN. This is the home of the Jack Daniels Distillery. It is also a dry
county. Weird. We toured the facility and enjoyed a refreshing glass of
lemonade at the end. We traveled to Nashville, and met up with Elaine
Woo. She took us to a multitude of bars that celerate southern culture.
We rode mechanical bulls, listened to Bluegrass music and watched drunk
hillbillies dance and shour "Ring of fire" and "Sweet Home
Alabama". After Breakfast at the Red Rooster the next Morning, Adam
and I went to Memphis. First stop Graceland. Amazing. No flash photography,
which explains all my dark, blurry and underexposed pictures. Cool stuff.
Please especially note that Elvis's TCB (Takin' care of business) symbol
is on his grave. After this life changing experience, we went to the famous
Sun Studios, where people like Elvis, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Roy Orbison,
Jerry Lee Lewis, Ike Turner and many others got their starts. The tour
guides first name was "Eldorado". He offered to buy us coffee.
After this we cruised all around Memphis, including the "No Crusing
Zone". Seriously, we were walkin' in Memphis. We saw the ghost of
elvis on Union Avenue. Followed him up to the gates of Graceland, watched
him walk right through. Actually, I think that is too far to walk. Instead
we went up Beale street, which is now touristy and gentrified. Then we
walked up the bank of the Mississippi. We drove to Arkansas for dinner
at a Waffle House. I had a waffle. The next day we drove to Ann Arbor
Michigan, Stopping fo rhte Jim Beam Distillery and in Indianapolis to
visit Adam's mom. I returned to New York the next day.
