5/5/08: Dad Vail update

There will be an alumni tent this year (in space #27 along the race course).  This tent has been organized for the past few years by Brett Saunders, Valerie Armstead, and Sarah Kaufman.  If you can make it out there please thank them for all their hard work!  Also, I was asked to send out the word for any alumni in the greater Philadelphia area that would be able to house rowers for the regatta weekend.  If so, please contact Valerie Armstead or Brett Saunders right away.

4/29/08: Dad Vail Regatta May 9-10

Hello Alumni!
I know it's been a long time since I last contacted you, but things with the team are still hopping. The team is in the midst of its spring racing season, which will culminate in the Dad Vail Regatta May 9-10. If you're going to be in the Philadelphia area, I hope you can make it out to help support the team. If you think you might be able to make it out let me know. Also don't forget that Alumni weekend will occur on the U of C campus June 5-8, more details can be found here http://alumniweekend.uchicago.edu/. If the team is planning an event for alumni I will check with them and get back to you.

Chris

12/30/07: Alumni Erg Challenge

Dear All,
It's time again for the January Virtual Team Challenge. Last year we had good sign up, but could have pushed for some stronger participation. This year, it's nose to the grindstone, serious competition (sort of). Of course, as always, we're happy to have you at any meter tally. Since we've had this going three years now, our goal was to turn it into a fundraising opportunity for the team. Apparently, we're not quite there yet. We'll have to push that one to next year.  In order to gear up for it, we'd really like to see some good numbers this year. For those on the list who are new to it, the basic idea is that you erg however many meters you erg and log it on the Concept 2 website as part of the "U Chicago Alumni Crew" virtual team. We compete against other virtual teams. This year, hopefully, we'll compete against the U Chicago Crews virtual team. Interesting to see what alumni can do against spritely young rowers, no? I've transferred all names from last years team.   If you update your account and change your e-mail address or any such, please notify me, so I can make necessary changes. If you're new, you can find info about creating an account, etc at the following URL:
http://www.concept2.com/us/motivation/challenges/virtual.asp
Please pass on info about the event to any others you might think would be interested and whose names are not on the list. All you really need to do this is a computer and a gym pass. Competition begins on January first and I expect to hear some high quality trash talking to accompany the numbers. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions or if  you want to be removed from the list.

Yours,
Albert Bowers BA '01  email

8/30/07: Don't wait, RSVP today!

I have received only a trickle of response to my latest emails for the Alumni Row and BBQ.  If you haven't done so yet, email me and RSVP.  You can also check out the RSVP list to see who's coming.

Also, check out the team's calendar of events on Google calendars.  You can subscribe to the calendar using the these links:

8/2/07: Start making plans...

For our 6th Annual Alumni Row and BBQ!  Complete details and updates can be found on the Row and BBQ page. Hope you can make it thise year!

5/9/07: Dad Vails this weekend!!!

Just a quick reminder that this Friday and Saturday will be the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia. Chicago Crew will be there competing and if you're in the area and can come out, we'd love to see you! If you need to reach me at the race, my cell number is 631-804-3827. There will be an alumni tent set up near the finish line on Saturday.  Hope you can make it!

4/9/07: Bidding is Still Open

No bids have been received yet!  Nada. Zip.  Now's your chance!  Put in a bid today!!!

2/12/07: New Boats and Fundraising Opportunity

If you haven't heard yet, the team was recently awarded money for the purchase of three new boats by the Women's Board.  One of the boats will be named on their behalf, but the other two, aWintech 2x- and single scull will available for naming.  If you have the money, or can get a group of people together to name a boat, check out the new Fundraising page.  Also, there will be several oars, blades, handles, and other goodlies that the teamis offerring up for sale. This page will be updated frequently with the highest bids for naming the boats.

1/16/07: Oh God, has it been that long!?!

Hey folks, sorry for the major lack of updates.  What can I say? A PhD can be a little hard sometimes.  That said, I have managed to update the main reason people visit this site: photos.  So the photos page has been updated, so check it out.  I will add more to it soon.  Remember, if you have pictures from any alumni events, send them my way!

I will be trying to add more updates shortly as soon as I can get my act together, so keep a lookout.

9/22/06: Rain, Rain Go Away...

There is a good chance of showers tomorrow with maybe some thunder storms.  For those going to the row, we'll still meet and decide on-site whether it is safe to go out or not.  There is plenty of covered space around the Ida Noyes courtyard, so this shouldn't interrupt the BBQ.  I'll be leaving this evening at 7 pm EST, so if you need to reach me tomorrow, please call 631-804-3827.  See you in Chicago!

9/19/06: Directions Posted!

I have posted the directions to the new site, which is off of North Ave.  There is a Mapquest link to help you navigate.  Click here to go to the directions.  Check out this cool Google map, which is a hybrid satellite photo/street atlas.  You can zoom in far enough to see the boats on the racks and the dock!

9/18/06: The Time is Nigh

The fifth Annual Row and BBQ is this Saturday, Sept. 23!  Don't forget to RSVP to me so we know you're coming!  See the Row & BBQ page for more details, including the RSVP list and directions to the events.

8/28/06: Fundraising

Good news!  We've now raised about $1400 so far to help send the team to the Charles this year!

8/16/06: Help Send Rowers to the Charles This Year!

A new fundraiser is in the works to collect funds to help defray the costs of rowers who travel to the Head of the Charles.  See the description from Danny Wasserman below:

"Since the Fall of 2003, our men's 4+ has automatically qualified our club for the Head of the Charles every year. The team is continuing to take steps in the right direction every year, but as you all know and remember, the cost of being on the team is very high. This year, the gift of the graduating class is to make a contribution to funding the team's hotel costs when they compete at the Charles in October. We hope that this will remove a substantial financial burden from our rowers who are already responsible for the many other costs associated with being on the team. The graduating class is already committed to making a contribution to paying for the team's hotel costs, but since this year's class consisted of just Eric Jacobsen and me, we're hoping to enlist the support of all our loyal alumni.  If you might be able to make a contribution towards helping the team, please do let me know as soon as possible. Remember there's no donation too small (or too big!). Even with my measly graduate student stipend, I'll still be scraping something together, so I'm hoping that together, we'll be able to make a very helpful gift to the team."

The team needs approximately $1,700 to $1,800 to cover hotel costs, and so far about $800 - $900 has been raised.  If you can contribute to this fund, please contact Danny Wasserman (diw7b<AT>virginia.edu) or Chris Noto.

8/1/06: It's Just Around the Corner...

Hey everyone, I finally have a working computer and can start posting to the site again!  We've set the date for the 5th Annual Alumni Row & BBQ.  It will take place on Saturday, September 23 in Chicago.  The row will take place in the morning and we'll hold the BBQ in the Ida Noyes Courtyard in the afternoon. Don't forget the post-BBQ trip to Jimmy's to continue the fun. If you've already decided to attend, reply to me with 1) which event you'll be attending (row, bbq, both), 2) number of guests if any, 3) side you row (or cox), and 4) any special food requests/requirements. See the event page for more details in the coming weeks.

Last year we had a great turnout for the club's 30th anniversary and I'd like to keep this momentum going, so save Sept. 23 on your calendar!

5/8/06: Dad Vail Regatta

Don't forget that the Dad Vail Regatta is this weekend, May 12-13. I'm going to be down in Philly to cheer on the team and I hope you can join me. If you'll be in town, I'd like to organize an impromptu get-together for drinks and/or food on Saturday. Let me know if you're interested. Also, if any crew alums that graduated in 2001 are going to our five year class reunion June 1-4 in Chicago, let me know. I'll be there and it would be great to see you. Hope all is well as we make the transition into Summer. Keep an eye out for more information on our 2006 Alumni Row and BBQ this Fall. As always, feel free to drop me a line if you have news or ideas to share.

3/27/06: Updates in the works

Working on several updates.  Don't forget the Dad Vail Regatta is coming up May 12-13.  Hope to see some of you there!

2/13/06: Alumni Erg Challenge

Last month myself, Albert Bowers, Matt Healy, Seth Hillbrand, and Tim McGovern participated in Concept2's 1st Annual Online Virtual Team Challenge.  The challenge was to row as many meters as possible between January 1st and 31st.  This was a great excuse to get back on the erg and get into shape again.  We had such a good time doing it that we want to extend the invitation out to all alumni. Our team is registered under the name "U Chicago Alumni Crew".  Been thinking about erging  but wasn't sure?  Now's the time to get back on the horse...er, erg!

If you're interested in joining our virtual team for future team challenges, you will first need to create a profile and personal logbook with Concept2.  Next send an email to me. Once you have done this, any meters you row will automatically be added to the team total during virtual team challeneges.  Otherwise, the personal logbook is a great way to keep track of your progress and motivate you to pull harder.

Keep an eye on this website, because I will eventually be adding a virtual team workouts section sometime in the future.  Give yourself a break from the boring old steady-state!  Any suggestions on your favorite workouts?  Please send them to me.

11/22/05: Pictures Finally Posted!

Sorry it took so long, but the pictures from the 2005 Alumni Row and BBQ have now been posted on the photos page.  Go check them out.  I will hopefully have some time for a few more updates shortly.  Who ever thought earning a PhD could consume so much time.

9/25/05: You've Done it Again!

Thanks to everyone who helped make this the biggest and best reunion yet! The row saw three full eights on the water this year, with 4 very intense and contested race pieces taking place on the north branch of the Chicago River. This just proves that you never really forget how to move a boat. Despite harrowing encounters with a barge and retaining wall, this was one of the most entertaining and fun rows we've had. At the BBQ Susan Urbas, a co-founder of UC Women's Crew, gave us all a historical perspective on the team's roots and the important role crew has played in the University community since it's inception in 1975. As such, crew's unique role at Chicago has played no small part in it's continued success as an organization over the years. Susan also brought with her several items from that first year 1975-1976, including original regatta photos and racing uniforms. We're fortunate to be able to glimpse these early days of our club's history, it's amazing how little some things have changed. I hope we can continue to share the numerous photos, memories, and keepsakes which many of us have collected and kept from our time on the team.

The silent auction for naming rights to the 1999 Hudson 8+ raised $1100 for the team, with the winner choosing the name "Continuity", in recognition of the longstanding traditions of excellence and perseverance that have been mainstays of the Chicago Crew experience. Chocolate birthday cake nicely rounded out the end of the activities for the afternoon. Every alumnus received a Chicago Crew Alumni magnet to mark the occasion (and hold those donations checks on the fridge till they're ready for mailing). Of course many of us retired to Jimmy's to continue the evening, where old friendships burned bright in the dim light of Jimmy's back room. All in all it was the best event we could have hoped for. If you have pictures from this weekend, please send them to me. I'd love to post them on the photos page. Check back on the site in a little while for the new pics.

Thirty alumni were in attendance this year with representatives from every decade of the team's existence, the 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's. I've never seen so many old and new faces in one place, but we want even more! So please spread the word to your old teammates to attend next year. And look out for more updates in the coming months. If you're going to be in or near Boston on October 21-22, stop by to watch the team compete in the Head of the Charles. There's also talk of having an alumni tent at the Dad Vail Regatta in the Spring. For the meantime though, I think I need a break.

9/23/05: Row Information

Remember that we'll be meeting at 10 am in front of Henry Crown Field House if you need a ride to the team's new site.  It will leave at 10:20.  If you plan on meeting us there, the address is Crowley's Boat Yard, 2500 S. Corbett St.  Note that any other directions that point you to a site on 95th street are incorrect (the marina has two locations).  Tentative lineups have been posted here. We will be rowing 3 or 4 eights and maybe a four.  What a turnout!  If you have any problems, call Chris Noto's cell phone at 631-804-3827.

9/22/05: Important Updates!

The date is almost here!  We've finally secured a rain location for the event in the Ida Noyes courtyard pavilion.  Click here to get a map.  Shortly we will be sending out boat lineups for the row on Saturday morning.  Please be on time as we will be launching 4 full eights.  Be aware that there is a 30% chance of rain or thundershowers for Saturday, so come prepared.  I doubt it will be enough to keep us from having a good time. Everyone keep their fingers crossed

9/20/05: Friday Night Update

Another message from Adam Woodward on the 9/23 evening icebreaker for all alumni:

I am not sure how many people actually plan on showing up Friday night, but just in case a lot of you do, we will probably have to move the party from Sunit's place to Jimmy's.  So if you don't find us at Sunit's, then head over to Jimmy's.

Feel free to give me a call on my cell phone to find out our location: 213-925-1403.

Regards,

Adam

9/17/05: Alumni Meet and Greet Friday 9/23

Alumni Adam Woodward (AB'98) and Sunit Singh (AB '01, AM '03) will be hosting an icebreaker for all alumni on Friday night.  Here's their invitation:

For those of you who live in the Chicago area, or are coming in early for the Alumni weekend, Sunit Singh has been kind enough to offer up his brand new condo for a get together next Friday night. All are invited, even those of you who have never heard of Adam Woodward or Sunit Singh (which I find hard to believe, we are living legends), to enjoy some cocktails (rum & coke) conversations and what I am sure will be a good time. This is an informal event, so feel free to dress comfortably, and keep an open mind to a late night swim in the lake.

If you have any questions,  e-mail me at: ajwoodward[at]gmail.com or give a call on my cell: 213-925-1403.

I look forward to meeting new people and drinking with old friends.

Warm Regards,
Adam Woodward

Sunit Singh's address:
5452 S Cornell Ave #1W, Chicago, IL 60615   (click for map)

P.S. If you are not a fan of rum, vodka, or gin, please feel
free to bring a beverage of your choosing.  Also, there will
probably not be any food, so bring a few bucks and we can
order up some pizza later in the evening.

9/6/05: Location for BBQ

The location for the BBQ has been reserved!  We'll be having it in the Social Sciences Quad.  Click this link for a map.

8/15/05: Row & BBQ details updated

An updated schedule of events for the reunion activities has been posted on the Row and BBQ page. Approximate times have been set for all activities, but we're still working on the location for the BBQ.  Check out the RSVP page, it's been growing at a rapid rate.  If you haven't told me you're coming yet, please do!

7/26/05: 30th Anniversary Alumni Row & BBQ

I'm now accepting RSVP's for the 4th Annual Alumni Row & BBQ, which will be held on Saturday, September 24th in Chicago.  Please send me an email including if you are attending the row (if so, which side), BBQ (special dietary requests?), or both.  Also include the number of any additional guests, such as family members, which may be attending with you.  Full details on this year's event can be found on the official Row & BBQ page.  Please check back periodically, as we'll be updating this information as the event draws closer.

As always, if you have any questions comments, etc. please don't hesitate to contact me. Drop me a line sometime!

5/25/05: Humongous Update!

I have many things to share, since it's been a while following the last update I sent out. Take a look, there's some great stuff going on.

DAD VAIL REGATTA NEWS

This year the team sent two boats to the finals at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, a Varsity Women's 2- and Novice Women's 4+. The Varsity Men's 2- and Novice Men's 4+ made it into semi-finals. It's great to see so many boats advance through some of the toughest competition of the season.

TEAM RECEIVES GRANT FOR $19,400
A few months ago members of the officers board and coaches submitted a grant to the university Women's Board for the purchase of new equipment. In the past, the Women's Board has funded some essential purchases for the team, including equipment and a van. This money will be used to purchase several small boats (a couple 2x/2- and 1x) and new oars. These new purchases will allow for the greatest flexibility for training, helping to elevate crew performance to the next level.

COACHES NEEDED!
This year the team will lose 2 of its 3 coaches. Good coaching is essential to a small program such as ours and we could use help finding candidates in the Chicago area who would be interested in coaching. Please get the word out! You can contact the club President, Sarah Jubinski, at jubinski@uchicago.edu or coach Antonio Gisbert at gisbert@northwestern.edu Let's keep this successful trend going with a full coaching staff.

30TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION ROW AND BBQ: SATURDAY, SEPT. 24th 2005
Since 2002 we've held an annual alumni row and bbq in Chicago, as well as smaller get-togethers for regattas such as the Head of the Charles or Dad Vails. Believe it or not this year will mark the 30th anniversary of rowing at the U of C. We are the oldest continuously running sports club on campus. The best part is, we've remained completely student-run the entire time. If that's not worth celebrating, I don't know what is!
The date has been set for Saturday, September 24th. Mark your calendars now and start making plans to attend! We want to have the largest turnout yet, so we're aiming for 60+ attendees this year. We're going to have another auction, as well as a showing of crew memorabilia and pictures from across the ages. In order to make this happen we need your help:

I'll be sending out updates in the future with more details as things begin to take shape.

MAKING DONATIONS
As you can remember, crew is a very expensive sport, and the team has always had to rely on fundraising and dues in order to supplement the school's club allocation. Not sure what the team needs, the cost, or where to send it? The current address to send donations, as well as a wish list of items can be found here. If you do send in a donation, please let me know so appropriate thanks can be given.

2/24/05: Major updates completed!

After much work and thought (and finally some spare time), I have made some much-needed updates to the website.  From now on the front page will only display the most recent news, the rest will be stored in the archives. The countdown timer link died, so I've removed it for the meantime until I can perhaps find another. The photos page has now been updated with pictures from the Head of the Charles last October, including some good action shots of the team rowing. Also added is a contacts page with relevant info for sending contributions or conversing with the team.  The merchandise page has been updated and I hope you'll visit it.  All proceeds go directly to the team.

Don't forget that in September we'll be celebrating the 30th anniversary of rowing at the University of Chicago, so save the date.  I'll be sending out more updates in the coming months.

I've added the most recent newsletter from the Fall 2004 season.  You can get it here.
That's it for now.  As always you can email me with comments.

12/3/04: Website updates forthcoming...

As soon as a few projects are off my plate I will perform a huge website update, with new pictures, announcements, etc.  So check back in the next month or so for some big improvements!  The only update for now is a new mailing address to correspond with the team or send donations.

Ideas, rants, or just plain bored?  Send me an email.

10/4/04: A-L-U-M-N-I spells success!

What a great third installment of our now annual Alumni Row and BBQ!  This year was marked by an impressive turnout for the row: we were able to fill two full eights for the first time ever!  CRC was kind enough to let us borrow their ultralight eight and the team's Hudson eight was put into service for the row. Despite some slow points due to boat traffic,  there was some great rowing out on the water that day.  This was followed by an equally well-attended BBQ out at the Point, where Tammy Servies (AB '97) set a record-breaking donation of $400 to win the custom Chicago oarblade auction. By the end of the BBQ, $600 was raised for the team!  The evening was topped by a trip to Jimmy's, which was certainly an awesome time.  In all, 20 alumni participated this year.  Even if you missed the reunion this year, you can still give donations to the team.  Checks can be made out to "U of C Crew" and mailed to the address found here.  If you do plan on donating, please send me an email so we can keep track of who's giving and send thank you's.

This continued success has really inspired me to keep looking for new ways to build more bridges between alumni and current team members.  Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of rowing at the University of Chicago.  To commemorate this benchmark next year, I want to make this the largest and most well-attended reunion yet!  So mark your calendars for Saturday September 15, 2005.  I'd like to try and get 50 alumni to attend, so make plans now and spread the word!  If you're looking for a more immediate way to show your support, the team has three boats entered in the Head of the Charles this year.  So far I've heard from a few alumni who plan to attend.  If you'll be able to make it, email me and let me know.  Let's see if the team can get a repeat of last year's success

So far, alumni have made some great contributions, let's keep up the good work!

10/2/04: Pictures are now posted!

Details coming soon!  Pictures are now posted.  You can even order prints of your favorite pics online, just click the "Order Prints" button under the picture.  Go check 'em out!

9/15/04: Times for events

Times have been set! The row will take place at 11 am at the team's site. For directions click here. If you are in Hyde Park, we will be meeting at 10:30 am in front of Henry Crown. The BBQ will start around at 3-3:30 pm out at the Point. Look for the large maroon Chicago Crew flag (see Fig. 1). Don't forget the trip to Jimmy's afterwards!

If you're having trouble finding us, give me a call: 631-804-3827.

Figure 1

9/7/04: Almost There!

The countdown above doesn't lie, we're getting really close to the third Annual Alumni Row and BBQ people! Remember that now it's free! That's free rowing, free food, and a free chance to see old friends! Make sure you send me an email ASAP letting me know if you can attend, and if you will be bringing any guests.

Also, I am planning on being at the Head of the Charles again this year. It would be nice to get a Chicago cheering section going on one of the bridges. Let me know if you're interested.

8/24/04: More Great News

I've got two great pieces of news to share with everyone. That's right, TWO! Can't beat that with a stick. First, I've received official word that the Alumni Row and BBQ will now be a FREE event for all who attend. Thank the crew's officers board for that one.

The other great piece of news comes from Abby Cumpton (AB '02): "I had, however, meant to email you and tell you that two entirely U of C alumni boats raced at National championships last month-- Jessica Vandevusse (current men's coach, AB '94) and I won the Senior Lightweight 2- over Riverside, CRI, etc. Then in the Lightweight 4+ we got a silver with Megan Chapman (AB '03) and Stacy Oliver (MAPSS '04), and Eren Merzeci (AB '03) coxing. Anyway, I thought it was perhaps interesting that two all-alumni boats had some awesome races!"

Indeed it is, Abby!

If you have any news you'd like to share, as always, you can email me.

8/4/04: It's Coming...

Where has the time gone? Remember that our next annual Alumni Row and BBQ is set to occur on Saturday, September 18 in Chicago. So save the date. If you are planning on attending this year, please send me an email by September 11 confirming that you'll be there. Of course more details can be found on the Alumni Row and BBQ page. Hope to see you there!

5/17/04: Lucky Number 7

For one reason or another I find myself heading back to Chicago for my seventh straight end-of-year crew banquet. I'll be there as our alumni representative so I can get the low-down on how the year has gone and report back to all of you. From what I've gathered so far, the season has gone pretty well, especially the new UAA regatta, which was a great success. Sadly the Chicago Crew Alumni Cup did not go to one of our boats. Oh well, there's always net year! More info, results, and pictures of the UAA regatta can be found here.

5/3/04: Dad Vail Regatta this weekend!

Calling all alums!
This coming weekend (May 7-9) is the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, PA. Of course, Chicago Crew will be racing at this prestigious regatta and I'd like to ask you to come out and support the team if you have a chance to do so. While we will not have an official alumni tent this year (sorry, it's on the "to do" for next year!), if you think you may be attending, please let me know and I'll try to arrange a meeting point if there's enough interest. I will be around either Chicago's or Stony Brook's trailer in the launching area during most of the regatta if you'd like to come find me. You can always reach me at: 631-804-3827. Hope you can make it and if you have any news to send my way, please do so! See you there.

12/18/03: Website updates

The photos page has finally been updated, go check it out! You can click on a photo to enlarge it. Also, if you really like a picture, just click on the "Order Prints" button under the photo and you'll automatically be taken to a website where you can purchase prints. Hope you enjoy them! If you have any old pictures from years past that you would like to contribute, please email me.

11/18/03: Alumni Cup Information

Efforts are now underway to fundraise $1000 for the creation of an Alumni Cup and starting funds for a Chicago-hosted UAA championship regatta in the Spring. The team needs our support to make this happen. Not only that, but it will create a lasting tribute to the dedication and support of Crew Alumni. Please send in your donations. More information about the cup and how to donate can be found here.

10/20/03: Head of the Charles results

This past weekend saw two milestones for University of Chicago Crew. First, the team has purchased its first (and hopefully not last) brand-new Vespoli Millenium 4+, a serious boat for serious competitors. The second, and even better, achievement came with a fifth place finish in the Men's Club Four event with a time of 17:45.957. For their effort the men have won a medal!!! They have not only guaranteed re-entry next year, but will now move up to the Championship division of competition next year.

Apparently some great things are happening out there on the Chicago River every morning. In order to keep this trend going, I'm looking to organize more support from the alumni on all levels. If you are interested in volunteering time or donating money, please contact me. Together we can help keep the Chicago Crew name among those of the best up and coming clubs in the nation.

9/29/03: What a success!

Well, another UC Crew Alumni Row & BBQ has come and gone. Everything went very well, we had a good row in the morning, with some impromptu race pieces in the fours. You know what they say, rowing is just like riding a bike. It's nice to know that the Julie I. Soltero (a Pocock 4+ purchased in the spring of 1989) is still rowable. There aren't many shells that old still on the water these days! The following BBQ was well attended by both alums and current rowers. Though there was an overabundance of condiments available, I heard everyone got enough to eat. The BBQ ended a little earlier than last year, due to the cooler weather and winds coming off the lake, so many of us retired to Jimmy's for several more hours of crew-related revelrie. All told, I think that everybody who attended had a great time. This year was a success for two reasons: 1) we were able to continue what I hope will become an annual event and; 2) we've reached out to even more alumni as a result. If you attended this year, please fill out this feedback form and email it to me when you get the chance. I'll get the pictures posted as soon as I can. Before I close, I'd like to recognize a few folks who really helped in making this whole thing happen, specifically Chris Miller and his father, Wayne. Chris and I spent several hours conversing over email this summer, putting things together and he did all the footwork in Chicago getting supplies, with his father giving the transportation and monetary input to make it happen. Thanks!

One last thing before I end this, if you're in the Boston area (or plan to be) on Oct. 18th, the men's 4 will be racing in the Head of the Charles this year. If you have the chance, come cheer them on! The team's Race Calendar can be found here.

9/17/03: Times and places for events set

The row will take place at 11 am at the team's site. Those in Hyde Park will be meeting in front of the Henry Crown Field House at 10:30 to arrange rides. If you will have space for people, please let me know. The BBQ will take place at the Point (weather permitting) starting around 3 pm. Don't forget the open invitation to Jimmy's after the BBQ. Further details and directions can be found in the previous post.

8/12/03: The Second Annual Row & BBQ is coming!

The Second Annual Chicago Crew Alumni Row and BBQ is going to be held on September 20th, 2003 in Chicago. The exact times and places for all events are still being determined, but the row will happen in the late morning followed by the BBQ sometime in the afternoon. As per tradition, all those interested will retire to Jimmy's afterwards for a drink or two and casual conversation. Last year's get-together was a huge success, with nearly 20 alumni attending, representing many years of this organization's long history. This year we hope to expand things even further, reaching more alumni and creating a network of support to help the team. I'm sure we can all identify those times when being on the team necessitated a delicate balancing act and things were less than easy. What we would like to do this year is form an Alumni Board to work for the team's interests. People interested in volunteering will meet over the weekend to work on details of the organization. One of the most important things we would like to accomplish this year is to update and expand our alumni database, so if your contact information has changed, or there's someone you know who is not on the email list, please forward this to them and let us know. We're looking to do a little more fundraising this year, with a proposed raffle as one of the top ideas. If you have anything you'd like to donate for the raffle, or have any other fundraising ideas, please contact me.

If you plan on attending this year, please respond to Chris Noto by Friday, September 12, and indicate which event you will be doing, the row, BBQ, or both. The cost for this event will be $10 row/ $20 BBQ/ $25 for both/ $40 with a tshirt OR if you're a student $5 row/$10 BBQ/ $12 for both/ $20 with a tshirt. Checks can be made out to "University of Chicago Crew" and sent to:

University of Chicago Crew Club
Gerald Ratner Recreation and Athletic Center
5530 S. Ellis Avenue Room 141
Chicago IL 60637-1402
Attention: Sport Clubs or Tamsen Burke

Please indicate your name and which event(s) you are paying for.

Even if you can't make it, let us know how you're doing, we'd like to hear from you!

8/8/03: New message board created

A new message board has been created for people to talk and exchange updates with each other. It is completely free and requires no signing in or joining of any groups. I hope you all take advantage of it and see what's happening with your old crew friends!
