What's this all about?

You may ask yourself: "Who are these people sending me email about crew stuff?". I thought that perhaps a little background information on us and what we're about would be helpful. If you have any questions or comments about the site, you can always email me.  Email links have been removed to prevent SPAM programs from copying them.

Currently I'm in grad school studying paleontology, specializing mainly in the reconstruction of Mesozoic ecosystems. I was a member of Chicago Crew from 1997-2001, and was one of those people that had little or no prior experience before they got to college. I quickly fell in love with the sport and probably devoted a few too many hours to the team (as many of you can probably identify with). One thing I've always been interested in has been helping the team to expand further: buy new equipment, attract more rowers, become more competitve, and reach out to alumni. The team organized an informal alumni/graduating senior row and dinner in the spring of 2001. Shortly following my graduation, I started talking with others about forming a more organized parent and/or alumni support network to help the team. The following year we put together the first Alumni Row & BBQ, which went extremely well and was a very encouraging start. Accomplishing real change can be difficult in only four years. It takes the time and effort of many individuals, especially when trying to build a more competitve athletic program. We hope to build an organized Alumni Board to work with the team to help fundraise and offer support (such as food at races and places to stay) as well as offer social events for alumni such as the Row & BBQ. With a little work we can all lend support to a group of hard working student-athletes.

I joined the team during my first year at the business school. I rowed undergrad at Stanford University followed by several years at clubs in London, Washington, DC, and here in Chicago.

I have two primary goals for the team. The first goal is quite simple: to have all four of our teams medal at Dad Vail’s. While earning a medal at Vail’s is no mean feat – no U-Chicago crew has ever done it as far as we know – I firmly believe that we have the resources necessary to support a dedicated group of individuals that wants to achieve something special one May in Philadelphia.

While winning is something we strive for, I don’t subscribe to Vince Lombardi’s notion that “winning is everything.” For me, it is equally important that the journey our athletes take this year is a fulfilling and fun one. Whether you rowed yourself or are the parent or friend of a rower, you understand how tough this sport is and the sacrifices rowers make to participate in it. With that in mind, I am dedicated to fostering a culture that is supportive of all our athletes and encourages them to make crew one part of a balanced experience at the University of Chicago.

Albert hasn't provided me with a profile, but I know he's been rowing for a while.  He's helped out numerous times, working quietly behind the scenes.
