SUNY Stony Brook's rankings in the biological sciences

The report furnished below summarizes information taken from the recent report prepared by the National Research Council for the National Academy of Sciences. The tables given below compare SUNY at Stony Brook (USB) with universities in our region as well as nationally.

STONY BROOK VS THE NEW YORK PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES

Comment: Stony Brook is in a class by itself.

STONY BROOK VS NEIGHBORING STATE UNIVERSITIES

            Mol.Biol. Cell & Dev. E & E Genetics Neuro Mean

USB 32 36 10 22 28 25.6 Rutgers 36 60 26 31 46 40.0 Penn State 45 56 26 33 67 56.8 U. Mass 82 51 36 - 61 57.7 U. Conn 73 103 40 59 58 66.6 U. Maryland 84 87 45 - - 72.0

Comment: Stony Brook is in one class and the other five are in another class. Not one of the other schools outranks Stony Brook in even one program.

STONY BROOK VS THE NEW YORK PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES

Mol. Biol. Cell & Dev. E & E Genetics Neuro Mean

Columbia 10 19 - 12 6 11.8 Rockefeller 21 2 - - 13 12 Cornell 22 36 4 23 24 21.8 USB 32 36 10 22 28 25.6 Einstein 28 26 - 25 26 26.0 NYU 36 21 - 52 56 41.3 Rochester 55 44 60 29 43 46.2 Syracuse 110 96 - - - 103 Albany Med. 122 94 - 78 77 92.8 College NY Med. 171 121 128 - - 140 College

Comment: There appear to be four classes. 1) Elite - Columbia and Rockefeller. 2) Excellent - Cornell, USB and Albert Einstein. 3) Good - NYU and Rochester. 4) The rest - Syracuse, Albany Medical College and NY Medical College. It should be noted, however, that Columbia has no E & E which is Stony Brook's highest ranked program and Rockefeller has neither E & E nor Genetics. Genetics is Stony Brook's second highest ranked program.
