Searching the SUNY Library and Resources for References

One way of finding references is to use electronic research databases. For Marine Ecology, several of these databases can be quite useful. I recommend that you stick to the following ones for now:

Biological Abstracts

Aquatic Biology, Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources

Web of Science

How to get to them:

  1. You need to sign on to a web page.
  2. Connect to http://www.sunysb.edu
  3. Connect to the University Libraries link
  4. Connect to the Research Databases link
  5. Then you can connect to either the Biological Abstracts link or

the Aquatic Biology, Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources link

If you select the Biological Abstracts link, you will come to a page where you may have to click an "Ovid" link, then another page where you will click

These links get you to different databases with different styles of searching.

Biological Abstracts:

You can search in several modes, but key word is the most useful. For example, you might type hot vent in the key word area.

Another useful thing to do is to combine searches. If you made a second keyword search, say for bivalve, you might get tens of thousands of references. But then you can use the Combine searches to search for references that have both hot vent and bivalve. This will restrict things greatly.

The Aquatic Biology, Aquaculture and Fisheries Resources system is a bit more restrictive, but you can search among journals that are specialized in marine science. You will get different references if you use the two systems.

A third independent system is the Web of Science, which is more generalized but a bit more straightforward to get to. Find the link www. webofscience.com and proceed from there.
