[ How to Apply ]
All applications are for admission to the Fall semester only, due in our office by the close of business on January 15th. Late applications may be considered on a rolling basis. The Graduate Program in Genetics is a doctoral degree program and does not accept applicants seeking a Masters of Science degree.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to take the GRE examination early enough to ensure receipt of scores by the application deadline. Candidates should request that their test scores be sent to the Graduate School, Stony Brook University, institution code 2548. Final decisions concerning admission are made by the Dean of Graduate Studies, and the candidate is notified by letter from the Dean's office.
Predoctoral trainees are admitted to the Graduate School of the State University of New York at Stony Brook by application to a particular graduate program. Admission to the Graduate Program in Genetics is based on the following factors:
Educational Background:
Applicants should have undergraduate training in biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology.
Ideally, the undergraduate record should be strong in all areas. Evidence of an ability to perform well in science classes, particularly those stressing analytical and quantitative skills, are most important.
Strong statements of support from persons in a position to evaluate the applicant's potential for success as a graduate student have significant impact on admissions decisions. Three letters of recommendation are required.
These scores are utilized to gain a better perspective of the student's overall application. Percentiles are reviewed rather than the actual raw scores. Subject-specific exams are not required, but are helpful if they have been taken.
The Graduate School requires the TOEFL or IELTS examination of all candidates whose native language is other than English. For more information on English proficiency requirements, please see:

Although not required, previous research experience is strongly recommended. Many successful applicants have had some sort of independent laboratory experience indicative of an informed commitment to a research career.
It should be noted that each candidate is considered on the basis of all the factors listed above, with no one factor outweighing the others.
