Symposium to Honor George C. Williams

April 24, 2004

A symposium will be held on April 24, 2004 on the Stony Brook campus to celebrate George Williams’ contributions to Ecology and Evolution – the department and the disciplines. George came to Stony Brook in 1960 even before it existed as such and his accomplishments were instrumental in building the department’s reputation. He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 1993 and shared the Crafoord Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences with Ernst Mayr and John Maynard Smith in 1999 for his seminal contributions to evolutionary biology (press release [note this link can be slow to load]). Further information and a selected list of publications is available on his departmental web site.

A distinguished list of speakers has been assembled for the symposium, including George Barlow, Helena Cronin, Martin Daly and Margo Wilson (one talk), Steve Ferraro, Mart Gross, David Haig, Bobbi Low, Randy Nesse, and Mary Jane West-Eberhard. Some of these speakers have been friends and colleagues of George’s since his under-graduate days at UCLA, and they span the range of his theoretical contributions. The talks will run from 9:15 am until 5:00 pm (see the scientific program for the list of speakers and their titles). After the symposium, we will caravan to the Old Field Club, near by, and enjoy a banquet in George’s honor.

On-site registration for the symposium will begin at 8:30 am on April 24 but we encourage everyone to pre-register for the symposium and banquet. The preregistration form should be filled-out and submitted online or else printed and mailed in.

The Preliminary schedule is available now. Updates will be posted as the details are worked out.

Information about traveling to Stony Brook is located here. The symposium will be held in the Harriman Auditiorium. It is located at coordinate C4 on the campus map (marked in red on the annotated map). Visitor parking is available in the parking garage located at coordinate E5 on that same map or at the parking lot next to the Life Sciences building. The banquet will be held at the Old Field Club.

E&E Fund Raising Initiative

In conjunction with the symposium on April 24th, E&E will establish a new endowment account in Prof. George Williams' name that will be used to support students in evolutionary biology. The fund will be launched with a set of gifts and donations that will be announced at the time of the symposium. Follow this link to watch our progress towards this goal. Follow this link if you would like an opportunity to contribute to this new fund (or to one of our existing funds).
