Prior to coming to Stony Brook in January of 2003, Wiens was a curator in the Section of Amphibians and Reptiles at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh (1995–2002). He received his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin (1995) and his undergraduate degree at the University of Kansas (1991).
