Fire Island National SeashoreFire Island - A long (26 miles, 42 km) narrow (few hundred meters of sandy terrain) barrier beach with diverse shoreline habitats along the Great South Bay and Atlantic Ocean, beaches, and small pedestrian-only villages. Check ferry schedules in advance.

Jones Beach – Go to Jones Beach – a long, broad, beach with boardwalk and fast food.

Sagamore Hill National Historic Site (Long Island home of Theodore Roosevelt) – Sagamore Hill Includes Theodore Roosevelt’s home, a visitor center, museum, and extensive landscaped grounds, woods, and saltmarsh.

Stony Brook BeachesStony Brook Beaches

West Meadow Beach, Stony BrookWest Meadow Beach – Large public beach backed by a tidal creek. Parking is restricted to residents but not enforced in the evening; closes at dusk. The adjacent road to the south has been closed and the surrounding beach and marshland is protected. Five-minute drive from campus. (See also Stony Brook Beaches.)

Sand Street Beach, Stony Brook – A small, quiet, sandy beach across the tidal creek from West Meadow Beach and accessible from Stony Brook Village. Long walk from campus. (See also Stony Brook Beaches.)


DINING OPTIONS:

Dining on Campus – This site lists campus dining options at Stony Brook University during the Conference: Campus Dining. The most practical options for the lunch break are the food courts in the Student Activities Center (SAC) or the Student Union. Both are close to the Wang Center with a good range of choices and self-service. A guide for all campus dining options can be found here. Please check in advance to determine whether these dining facilities are open during the Conference.

Dining at a Walking Distance – There are several conventional and fast-food restaurants along the north edge of campus. The closest options are across the street from the Stony Brook train station, including Green Cactus Mexican Grill, Soup’s On, The Bench Bar and Grill, Jake Starr Café, Station Pizza and Brew, Ten 89 Noodle House, and Cool Monkey (self-serve frozen yogurt only).

About 300 meters to the east along Rt. 25A are the Curry Club (Indian), Subway, Eastern Pavilion (Japanese/Chinese), Bliss (French-American), Shshi Ichi Japanese Restaurant (more than sushi), and East Coast Burrito Company.

Dining within a short drive

Port JeffersonPort Jefferson - Ten-minute drive east on Rt. 25A from campus. Walk around village with port and wide range of shops and restaurants.

Stony BrookStony Brook - Long walk or short drive adjacent to campus.

East SetauketEast Setauket - Long walk and short drive adjacent to campus.

St. JamesSt. James - Ten-minute drive west on Rt. 25A from campus with a few good restaurants.

Lake GroveLake Grove - Ten-minute drive south on Nicholls Rd. then west on Rt 347 from campus with a few good restaurants and shopping malls.
