How to Get to Stony Brook University
By Car
From New York City, take the Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) eastbound from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan or the Throgs Neck Bridge or Whitestone Bridge in Queens to exit 62 North, and follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for 9 miles. The main entrance to the University is on the left.
By Train
Take the Long Island Railroad's Port Jefferson line from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. Trains to and from Penn Station generally require transfers at Jamaica or Huntington. Hicksville is also a transfer point on some trains. Here is the schedule for Stony Brook. Stony Brook is the second to last stop. The train stops at the north end of the campus. There are campus buses that stop at the campus side of the train station and encircle the campus.
By Ferry
Car ferries cross Long Island Sound at Bridgeport, Connecticut to Port Jefferson, Long Island Take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road, and turn left onto Nicolls. The University entrances are the first three intersections you come to, and you turn right to enter campus. Another ferry line crosses the Long Island Sound at New London, Connecticut to Orient Point, Long Island Take Route 25A west to Nicolls Road and proceed as above.
By Plane
Long Island's Islip-MacArthur Airport is 16 miles from the campus and is serviced by direct flights by major airlines and commuter lines. Driving directions to Stony Brook University from Islip-MacArthur Airport: Exit the airport and turn left onto Veterans Memorial Highway (Route 454 West). Merge onto Sunrise Highway (Route 27) and take the second exit onto Nicolls Road North. Drive north for 12 miles. The main entrance to the University is to the left.
New York City Area Airports (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark) are 50 miles to the west.
From JFK: The easiest way from JFK is to take AirTrain JFK to Jamaica to connect to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) for a train to Stony Brook. Follow the train directions above.
From EWR: Take AirTrain to Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station. At Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station, take a NJ TRANSIT or Amtrak train to New York Penn Station. From New York Penn Station, connect to Long Island Rail Road trains. Follow the train directions above. EWR is the least convenient of the three New York City Area Airports, but flights there are often the least expensive.
From LGA: Take the airport bus service to Penn Station in Manhattan and connect to the Long Island Rail Road trains. Follow the train directions above.
