international agreement (adopted in1983) dealing with plant genetic resources
for food and agriculture. Designed as an instrument to promote international
harmony in matters regarding access to plant genetic resources for food and
agriculture. Following extensive negotiations to revise the Undertaking in
harmony with the Convention on Biological Diversity, the binding International
Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture was adopted by

"The international treaty resulting
from the revision of the International Undertaking on Plant Genetic Resources
was adopted by the 2001 FAO Conference as a binding international instrument
to enter into force after ratification by 40 states. Its objectives are the
conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture
and equitable sharing of the benefits of this use."
