Welcome to life.bio
This is an instruction about how to access your life.bio account.



  1. Login
    You can login to life.bio to change your password, to transfer files to and from the server, to run UNIX programs and commands, to access your mailbox using PINE, etc.

    To login to life.bio, you may use SSH client program as above. Setup information:


    Host name: life.bio.sunysb.edu
    User name: xxxxxxxx (your life.bio account name)
    Password: ******** (your life.bio account password)

    This is a windows program, but you may have different SSH client program for Mac, Unix, and Windows. For other SSH client programs, please come to room 617 for help or figure them out yourself.

  2. Change Password
    As your password is temporarily setup by administrator, you have to change it at first time of your login.
    To change your password, please type 'passwd' after login as below.
    You need to type twice of your new password.

  3. Access Mailbox
    To access your mailbox on life.bio, type 'pine' after login, and follow instruction on the screen.

  4. Transfer Files
    To start file transfer window, click on ‘New File Transfer Windows’ icon to open File Transfer Window. Files can be transferred by 'Drag & Drop'.

  5. Email (Outlook Express)
    You can access your mailbox using Outlook Express.
    Setup information:
    My incoming mail server is a 'POP3' server.
    Incoming mail (POP3): life.bio.sunysb.edu
    Outgoing mail (SMTP): life.bio.sunysb.edu
    Account name: xxxxxxxx (your life.bio account name)
    Password: ******** (your life.bio account password)


    (1) check on 'My server requires authentication
    (2) click on 'Settings'
    (3) choose 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server' (4) click 'OK' -> 'OK' -> 'Close'

  6. Email (Webmail)
    To access Webmail system, go E&E website, and click on 'E&E Webmail'.

    If a 'Security Alert' windows popped up, just click on 'Yes'.

    In the login page, input your account information (Account Name and Password)

    This is the Webmail page, you can use this Webmail system to send and receive messages anywhere you have access to the internet.
