I am interested in understanding the causes of natural selection, how it arises, what systems are under selection in what kinds of environments. To do this, I have developed E. coli as a model system for the study of evolution and experimental evolution as a means of studying evolution in real time. This has lead to an interest in the population genetics of bacteria, bacteria species numbers, metabolic flux and fitness, pathoadapted mutations and how to find them, and the population ecology of Lyme disease. I am currently thinking about how one might use experimental evolution to study ecological interactions and am finding unexpected results.
