The Dykhuizen Lab conducts research into the genetics of populations using bacterial species such as Escherichia coli. While the lab utilizes many different in vitro techniques, much of our research is designed to exploit the highly controlled environments within chemostats. The use of chemostats allows for the investigation of various mechanisms from genotype, through phenotype and all the way to fitness of the entire organism. This "bottom-up" system of experimental evolution provides for insights into various aspects of the evolution of microbes.
